Jan Lundgren appointed COO of Arctic Rail

Jan Lundgren joins Arctic Rail as COO to strengthen cross-border railway collaboration.
Arctic Rail – a cross-border collaboration is pleased to announce that Jan Lundgren will join the organisation as Chief Operating Officer (COO) on a part-time basis, effective May 1.

Jan Lundgren brings extensive experience in logistics, railway systems and industrial operations. He currently serves as Head of Strategy Logistics within LKAB’s CEO staff, where he is engaged in long-term development programmes for logistics and mass mining at greater depth in the Kiruna mine.

Previously, Jan has held several senior roles within LKAB, including Head of Logistics, as well as CEO of LKAB Malmtrafik (iron ore railway transports). In these roles, he has been directly involved in major capacity increases on the Malmbanan, including the transition to 30-ton axle load and broader system development to increase throughput and reliability. His experience spans the full logistics chain – from operational performance to strategic system development – and includes close collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration and other key stakeholders for railway transports.

Jan will combine his new role at Arctic Rail with a continued major part-time position at LKAB. This dual engagement is seen as a strength and reflects a strategic alignment between industry and cross-border infrastructure development.

“We are very pleased to welcome Jan to Arctic Rail. His experience and perspective will strengthen our ability to develop the organisation and contribute to the long-term development of the Arctic railways,” says Chairman Markus Petäjäniemi.

Arctic Rail is currently strengthening its role as a platform for collaboration across northern Finland, Sweden and Norway. The organisation’s ambition is to act as a strong and competent voice for the trilateral railway system across the Northern Calotte – connecting the EU to the ice-free port of Narvik.

A key focus going forward is to build a clearer and more widely shared understanding of today’s and future railway systems on the Northern Calotte, as well as the scale and urgency of the capacity and resilience needs.

“I look forward to contributing to Arctic Rail by helping to build a stronger knowledge base around today’s and future railways on the Northern Calotte. Through data collection and scenario-based analysis, we can better illustrate both the opportunities and the very real scale of future capacity and robustness needs. This is, in many ways, the organisation’s most important overarching task,” says Jan Lundgren.

A central priority for the association is to further substantiate the case for viewing the Oulu–Luleå–Narvik corridor as the first fully integrated long-distance railway system across the three countries. This long corridor is also central to the upgrading and expansion of railway networks both north and south of the Oulu–Narvik corridor. Strengthening this corridor is critical not only for industrial growth and efficiency in peacetime, but also for ensuring capacity, resilience and security of supply in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical context.

With the addition of Jan Lundgren, Arctic Rail takes an important step in ramping up its organisation and operational capability – strengthening its role as a strategic platform for the future development of the Arctic railway network.
